- Modern tattooing is a result of indigenous practices of tattooing being stripped of their cultural significance and spirituality, leaving only artistic and personal expression.
- PrePhilippine tattooing traditions emphasize the following reasons for getting tattoos:

- Honoring ancestors and lineage

- Guidance

- Identification purposes
- Students will analyze common meanings for tattoos, sparking discussion on reasoning for tattoos in prePhilippine culture. Signs with labeled meanings will be posted around the classroom, and tattooed students will move to whichever sign most suits their reasoning for getting tattoos. Untattooed students will move to the sign that says “no tattoos.”
